Lab: Can Kinetic Energy Produce Heat?

Materials:

2 Drinking Cups
sand
tape
thermometer
clock

Procedures:
Fill a cup one-third full of dry sand that is at room temperature. Place the end of the thermometer in the sand and record the temperature (Temperature one). The thermometer should be in the middle of the sand when measuring the temperature. Now invert the second cup over the first cup. Seal by wrapping a piece of tape around the seam between the two cups. Be sure that the cups are secured tightly with tape before shaking them. The cups should be held at their junction in case the tape starts to weaken. Shake the sand back and forth inside the cups for five minutes. Punch a hole in the top of one of the cups. Insert the thermometer through the hole into the sand. Be careful to hold the thermometer at the end - not in the middle. Be careful when inserting the thermometer into the sand. Never use mercury thermometers!! Always use alcohol thermometers. Record the temperature again (Temperature Two).
